Many home cooks pay little attention to the food safety level of kitchen glassware, especially the frequently used tempered glass lid that stays in direct contact with hot food and steam. Inferior recycled glass made from waste raw materials carries heavy metal leaching risks, and a low-quality glass lid will release harmful substances into food under long-term high-temperature steaming, threatening family health. There are several simple ways to quickly identify food-safe tempered glass lid at home without professional testing.

First, check the product marking. A qualified food-grade tempered glass lid will carry clear food contact certification marks, such as FDA, LFGB or GB 4806 compliance statements on the package or product body. A regular tempered glass lid also marks its material type and applicable temperature range clearly, while unlabeled low-price glass lid is mostly made of untreated recycled glass.

Second, observe the appearance under natural light. Food-safe tempered glass lid has uniform and high transparency, with no dense bubbles, stone impurities or obvious color spots inside the glass. Recycled glass usually has slight turbidity, uneven thickness and visible internal streaks. For stainless steel wrapped glass lid, check whether the metal edge is smoothly polished without burrs; rough edge workmanship usually indicates non-standard production of the glass lid.

Third, do a simple smell test after rinsing with hot water. A food-grade tempered glass lid emits no peculiar smell even after being heated by steam, while inferior recycled glass releases a faint pungent odor when heated. Choosing a standard food-safe tempered glass lid ensures daily cooking safety and avoids long-term accumulation of harmful heavy metals from low-quality glass lid.
